Gryphon hockey men hold on to edge Lakehead
THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons scored four consecutive goals, then held on to edge the Lakehead Thunderwolves 4-3 in OUA men’s hockey preseason play Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens.
While Lakehead opened the scoring in the final minute of the first period, the Gryphs responded with four in a row with three of the goals coming in the second period.
A power-play goal midway through the third game Guelph a three-goal lead, but Lakehead narrowed the gap with a pair of power-play goals in the final five minutes of the game.
Todd Winder netted a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Ryan DaSilva and Marc Stevens also scored. Stephen Templeton assisted on three of the goals while Andrew Dodson, DaSilva, Ryan Valentini and Giordano Finoro each had one assist.
Scoring for Lakehead were Patrick Murphy, Kyle Auger and Josh Laframboise. Daniel Del Paggio picked up two assists while single assists were awarded to Tomas Soustal, Laframboise and Auger.
Lakehead outshot the Gryphs 46-36 and went 3-for-7 on its power play while the Gryphs were a perfect 3-for-3.
Brendan Cregan picked up the win in the Guelph net while Brock Aiken took the loss for Lakehead.
The game completes the preseason for the Gryphs who won all four of their preseason matches.
They’re to open their regular season Friday with a 7 p.m. game against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Toronto’s Varsity Arena.
That game will be the start of a busy weekend for the Gryphs as they’re also to play a pair of exhibition games against NCAA opponents. The Gryphs are to battle the Vermont Catamounts at Burlington, Vt., Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. and the New Hampshire Wildcats at Durham, NH, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.
