Gryphon hockey men lead by three, but lose in OT

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons squandered a three-goal lead as they were edged 4-3 in overtime by the Toronto Metropolitan Bold in OUA men’s hockey play at the Mattamy Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs carried a 3-0 lead into the third period, but TMU pulled even by the 11-minute mark of the period and won it when Ryan Wells scored 55 seconds into overtime.

The Gryphs scored the lone goal of the first period and added two more in the second.

Luke Bignell, Ted McGeen and Luke Kutkevicius had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while assists went to Ted Nichol, Jaxon Camp, Cameron Searles, Ashton Reesor and Anthony Tabak.

Scoring for the Bold were Kevin Gursoy, Jesse Barwell, Elijah Roberts and Wells. Chris Playfair, William Portokalis, Patrick Fellows, Kyle Bollers, Jackson Doherty, Dustin Hutton and Holden Rogers each had an assist.

The Gryphs outshot TMU 31-27.

Brendan Cregan had 23 saves for the Gryphs while Kai Edmonds had 28 for the Bold.

The result leaves the Gryphs fifth in the West Division at 2-0-1-0 and TMU atop the division at 4-1-0-0.

The Gryphs are to host the Lakehead Thunderwolves (3-1-0-0) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
