Gryphon hockey men leave Brock Badgers behind

ST. CATHARINES – A pair of goals in the opening minute of the second period sparked the Guelph Gryphons to a 5-1 victory over the Brock Badgers in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

Those two goals, scored 35 seconds apart, doubled Guelph’s lead and put the Gryphs in the driver’s seat as it extended a 2-0 lead into a 4-0 advantage. Those two goals were also the only goals of the second period.

Marc Stevens had a pair of goals for the Gryphs while the other goals were scored by Todd Winder, Ryan O’Bonsawin and Ryan Valentini. Mikkel Aagaard assisted on two of the goals while Gio Finoro, Zach McFadden, Stevens, Winder, Matt Kenney, Justin Lemcke and Jesse Saban each had one.

Justin Brack netted Brock’s goal at 3:10 of the third period. Assists on the goal went to Skylar Pacheco and Connor Walters.

The Gryphs outshot the Badgers 30-28 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while Brock was scoreless on seven power plays. Yes, it was a typical Guelph-Brock match with plenty of penalties – 58 minutes for the Gryphs and 30 for Brock. The totals included three misconducts for Guelph and one for Brock.

The Gryphs are fifth in the West Division at 6-3-3 while Brock is fourth at 8-4-1.

The Gryphs are to play the York Lions (5-6-1) at York’s Canlan Ice Centre Saturday at 2:15 p.m.
