Gryphon hockey men net three in third for preseason win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored three unanswered goals in the third period to down the Toronto Varsity Blues 6-3 in their OUA men’s hockey preseason opener Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs shot ahead for good on a goal by Luke Kutkevicius at 6:02 of the third and then added two more goals later in the period, the final one an empty-netter with 17 seconds to go.

The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and 3-3 after the second.

Connor Bramwell, Lucas Chiodo, Nick Isaacson, Kutkevicius, Giordano Finoro and Ted McGeen each scored for the Gryphs while single assists were awarded to Finoro, Chiodo, Ryan Da Silva, Jacob Winterton, Isaacson, Kutkevicius and Ryan Da Silva.

Scoring for Toronto were Cole Purboo, Kyle Clarke and Peyton Reeves while Billy Moskal, Anthony Beauchamp, Oliver Brenwell, Reeves, Brendan Bornstein and David Thomson each had an assist.

Brendan Cregan started in net for the Gryphs and had 17 saves in the first 33 minutes while Colton Incze played the final 27 minutes and had 10 saves to pick up the win.

Jett Alexander played the first two periods for Toronto and had 12 saves while Frederic Foulem played the third and had three saves. Foulem took the loss.

Toronto outshot the Gryphs 30-21 and both teams scored a power-play goal, Guelph on three power plays and Toronto on five.

Next preseason game for the Gryphs is Thursday when they’re to host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
