Gryphon hockey men net three in third to top Lakehead

THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons struck for three third-period goals to topple the Lakehead Thunderwolves 4-1 in OUA men’s hockey preseason play Friday night at the Fort William Gardens.

Two of Guelph’s third-period goals were empty-netters in the final minute and a half of the game.

The teams scored once apiece in the first period, Lakehead scoring first, before a scoreless second period.

Guelph hit for the eventual game-winner 17 seconds into the third period.

Zachary Poirier, Ted Nichol, Ryan DaSilva and Giordano Finoro each had a goal for the Gryphs while DaSilva also had two assists. Ryan Valentini had one assist.

Andrew Masters picked up the win in net as he made 33 saves.

Cooper Leitch scored for Lakehead midway through the first period while Greg Smith and Tomas Soustal were awarded assists.

Nic Renyard had 28 saves in the Lakehead net.

Both teams went 0-for-1 on their power plays.

The teams are to meet again Saturday at the Fort William Gardens. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Gryphs are 3-0-0 in the preseason and are to open their OUA regular season Friday against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Toronto’s Varsity Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
