Gryphon hockey men nip Windsor in Ridgetown Showdown

RIDGETOWN, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons connected for a pair of goals in the third period to edge the Windsor Lancers 3-2 in the Gryphs’ second annual Ridgetown Showdown OUA men’s preseason hockey game Thursday night at the East Kent Memorial Arena.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Gryphs scored the lone goal of the second period.

Connor Bramwell pulled the Gryphs even 5:45 into the third and Zach McFadden fired in the winner just over seven minutes later.

Reilly O’Connor had scored the first-period goal for Guelph while Cody Thompson had two assists and Todd Winder, Seth Swenson, Ted Nichol and Scott Simmonds each had one assist.

The Gryphs won the first ever Ridgetown Showdown over Windsor 2-1 last year.

The Gryphs and Lancers are to meet again in preseason play Saturday at the South Windsor Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Next weekend will be Guelph’s annual trip to play NCAA opponents as they’re to tangle with the Clarkson Golden Knights Oct. 6 at Potsdam, N.Y., and the Colgate Raiders Oct. 7 at Hamilton, N.Y.

The Gryphs are to open their regular season Oct. 11 when they host the Ryerson Rams at the Gryphon Centre at 7:15 p.m.
