Gryphon hockey men nipped by 16th-ranked RedHawks

OXFORD, Ohio – The Guelph Gryphons returned from their exam and Christmas break to suffer a 3-1 loss to the Miami, Ohio, RedHawks in an exhibition university men’s hockey game Sunday that saw every goal in the game scored in the final 10 minutes of the contest.

The Gryphs battled the RedHawks, the 16th-ranked team in NCAA Division 1, scoreless through the first two and a half periods before the hosts scored a pair of goals 18 seconds apart.

Mark Raycroft connected for Guelph’s goal with 3:21 to go, but Miami, Ohio, added the final goal with one second to go while playing shorthanded.

Marc Stevens and Cody Thompson assisted on Raycroft’s goal.

Ryan Siroky, Christian Mohs and Derek Daschke scored for Miami. Assists went to Karch Bachman, Alec Mahalak and Ben Lown.

Andrew Masters was in net for the Gryphs and he made 30 saves.

Miami goaltenders Ryan Larkin and Jordan Uhelski split time in net. Larkin made eight saves in 32:21 and Uhelski, the winning goalkeeper, had 11 saves in 27:34.
