
Gryphon hockey men nipped in OT by Windsor
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons’ winless streak in OUA men’s hockey play reached four games Saturday when they were edged 5-4 in overtime by the Windsor Lancers at the Gryphon Centre.
It was the second loss to Windsor in as many nights and their seventh in a row if a trio of exhibition games against NCAA opponents is considered.

The Gryphs started their regular season with a pair of wins, but haven’t been victorious since edging the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 in their home opener Oct. 15.
It looked like the losing streak might end Saturday when the Gryphs took a 4-1 lead in the first period, but Windsor rallied with a goal in the second and two in the third to send the game into overtime.
Hunter Holmes put an end to the match when he tallied at 1:11 of the extra frame for the visiting Lancers.
Giordano Biondi had two goals for the Gryphs while Anthony Tabak and Zach Poirier added a goal apiece. Nathan Allensen assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Ted McGeen, Zach Roberts, Tabak, Duncan Penman and Ethan Doyle.
Robbie Burt (on a penalty shot), Will Ennis, Anthony Stefano and Jaydon Fetter scored in regulation time for Windsor. Getting one assist apiece were Matt Dorsey, Holmes, Brady Pataki, Nolan Gardiner, Burt and Ennis.
The Lancers outshot the Gryphs 26-25. Windsor went 1-for-6 on its power play while the Gryphs went 1-for-4.
Nate McDonald made 21 saves in net for the Gryphs while Dakota Lund-Cornish started in net for the Lancers, but was replaced by Nathan Torchia after Guelph’s fourth goal 15 minutes into the first period. Lund-Cornish had five saves while Torchia had 16.
The Gryphs have fallen to eighth in the West Division at 2-2-2-0 while Windsor and the Toronto Metropolitan Bold lead with identical 7-1-0-0 records.
The Gryphs have a pair of road games this week as they’re to play the Laurier Golden Hawks () at the Sun Life Financial Arena in the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Friday at 7 p.m. and the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena Saturday at 3 p.m.
