Gryphon hockey men prevail in overtime to advance to West final
ST. CATHARINES – An unassisted goal by Luke Kutkevicius a little under seven minutes into overtime gave the Guelph Gryphons a 2-1 victory over the Brock Badgers Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The win gives the Gryphs a 2-0 sweep of their best-of-three OUA men’s hockey West Division semifinal.
The Gryphs never trailed in the game that was scoreless for more than 45 minutes.
Bobby Dow opened the scoring for Guelph at 15:45 of the third period. Ryan Da Silva and Cole Cameron assisted on the play.
The lead for the Gryphs lasted 39 seconds until Jared Marino tied it for the Badgers. Assists on that goal went to Jordan Maletta and Johnathon Schaefer.
The Gryphs outshot Brock 52-32 and 41-19 after the first period.
Brendan Cregan made 31 saves in the Guelph net for the win while Mario Culina took the overtime loss for Brock despite making 50 saves.
The Gryphs were 0-for-3 on their power play while Brock was scoreless on its lone power play.
The Badgers took 28 minutes in penalties while the Gryphs were whistled for four. Brock’s total included a gross misconduct for a discriminatory slur to Maletta and a game misconduct for abuse of official to coach Marty Williamson, both coming after the Gryphs scored the winning goal.
The win puts the Gryphs in the best-of-three West Division final against the winner of the other divisional semifinal against either the Ryerson Rams or Western Mustangs. Ryerson won the opening game of that series. Game 2 is to go Saturday at Western and Game 3, if it’s needed, is to go Sunday at Toronto.
This will be the fifth time since the 2009-10 season and fourth time in six years that the Gryphs have qualified for the OUA West final.
