Gryphon hockey men pummel Queen’s for first win
KINGSTON – Four goals in the second period Friday night sparked the Guelph Gryphons to their first win in OUA men’s hockey league play this season.
The second-period goals powered the Gryphs to a 7-1 whitewash of the Queen’s Gaels at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
The Gryphs had lost their previous three games, the first three of the regular season, all by 4-3 scores, two in overtime.
Friday, the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Gryphs shot ahead 5-1 by the end of the second.
Cody Thompson, Todd Winder and Marc Stevens each scored twice for the Gryphs while Scott Simmonds scored the other goal. Connor Bramwell, Winder and Simmonds each had two assists while Mark Raycroft, Braydon Munn, Ted Nichol, Zach McFadden, Michael Stevens and Thompson had one each.
Graeme Brown scored the goal for Queen’s while assists were awarded to Slater Doggett and Ben Fanjoy.
Evan Cormier made 23 saves for the win in net for Guelph. Jack Flinn took the loss for Queen’s. He had 25 saves in his stint while Justin Fazio made 22 in his time in net for the Gaels.
The Gryphs outshot the Gaels 54-24 and were a perfect 3-for-3 on their power play while Queen’s was scoreless on four power plays.
The loss was the first of the season for Queen’s and leaves the Gaels at 3-1-0.
The Gryphs are to play the RMC Paladins (2-3-0) at Kingston’s Constantine Arena Saturday at 7 p.m. before playing an exhibition game against the NCAA’s Cornell Big Red Sunday afternoon at Ithaca, N.Y.
