Gryphon hockey men rally in third to top Warriors

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons struck for five goals in a span of six minutes and 13 seconds in the third period to claim a 9-6 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night at Waterloo’s Columbia Ice Fields.

The goals that gave the Gryphs the win all came in the final eight and a half minutes of the game.

The Gryphs had led 2-0 at the end of the first period before the host Warriors shot ahead 4-3 in the second and extended it to 6-4 with just under nine minutes to go in the third.

Todd Winder, Mikkel Aagaard, Gio Finoro and Ryan Valentini each had a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Ryan Da Silva scored the other one. Aagaard, Jesse Saban and Ted Nichol each had two assists and Winder, Justin Lemcke, Bobby Dow, Luke Kutkevicius, Connor Bramwell, Valentini, Marc Stevens and Finoro each had one.

Jacob Cascagnette and Owen Burnell tallied twice apiece for Waterloo while Markson Bechtold and Zac Coulter each added a single goal. Getting two assists each were Cam Nicoll, Chase Campbell and Alex Pawelczyk while Michael Morgan, Cascagnette, Connor Lovie and Dave Comeau each had one.

The Gryphs outshot the Warriors 16-3 in the third period for an overall 39-22 advantage. Both team’s power plays clicked as Guelph went 3-for-5 and Waterloo went 2-for-4.

Brendan Cregan had 16 saves in the Guelph net while Julian Sime had 30 for Waterloo.

Next game for the Gryphs is their annual Frosty Mug match at the Sleeman Centre Thursday night. Laurier Golden Hawks will provide the opposition.
