Gryphon hockey men rally to drop York

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered the first goal of the game before rallying for a 4-1 victory over the York Lions in OUA men’s hockey play Sunday night at the Canlan Ice Centre.

Josh LaFrance opened the scoring for York with just over four minutes to go in the first period.

The Gryphs responded 29 seconds later with their first of four consecutive goals.

The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Guelph led 3-1 at the end of the second.

Cody Thompson, Scott Simmonds, Patrick Kudla and Josh McFadden scored one goal apiece for the Gryphs while Mark Raycroft, Simmonds, Todd Winder, Thompson, Mathieu Henderson and Seth Swenson each had one assist.

The Lions outshot the Gryphs 43-37. Both teams had three power plays, Guelph getting one power-play goal and the Gryphs held York scoreless on its power plays.

Jason Da Silva was the winning netminder for the Gryphs while Alex Fotinos was tagged with the loss for York.

The Lions lead the West Division at 7-2-0 while the Gryphs are fourth at 4-3-1.

The Gryphs have a pair of games at the Gryphon Centre on the weekend as they’re to host the Lakehead Thunderwolves (4-3-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Waterloo Warriors (3-3-2) Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
