Gryphon hockey men score first, but lose to Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons scored the first goal of the game, but the scoring was all Western Mustangs after that as the Gryphs were downed 4-1 in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night at Western’s Thompson arena.

Western led 2-1 at the end of the first period before adding a goal in the second and another goal in the third.

Among Western’s goals were a power-play marker and a shorthanded goal.

Nick Boyer scored for the Gryphs with Stephen Templeton assisting on the goal.

Mitchell Fitzmorris, Ethan Szypula, Alex Di Carlo and Anthony Stefano fired in a goal apiece for Western while Kyle Petit had two assists and Mitchell Brooks, Kolten Olynek, Stephen Desrocher, Stefano, Adam Sinclair and goaltender Luke Peresinni had one apiece.

Western outshot the Gryphs 37-35 and went 1-for-7 on its power play while the Gryphs were scoreless on five power plays.

Andrew Masters took the loss in the Guelph net. He had 33 saves while Peresinni had 34 for the win.

The loss drops the Gryphs to 6-9-2-2 while Western improves to 10-6-1-1. The Gryphs are tied for seventh in the West Division while Western is fourth.

The Gryphs are to play the Ryerson Rams (12-4-1-1) at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
