Gryphon hockey men seeded fourth for national tournament

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons have been seeded fourth for this week’s U Sports men’s hockey championship tournament at Lethbridge.

Top seeds, just as in the women’s tournament, are the Canada West champion and defending U Sports champion Alberta Golden Bears. They posted a 24-3-1 record in the regular season and won four of their five playoff games.

Atlantic champion New Brunswick Reds are seeded second. They were 25-2-3 in the regular season and unbeaten in their five playoff games.

Ontario champion Queen’s Gaels are seeded third. They went 18-10-0 in the regular season and got it together to win seven of their eight playoff games.

The Gryphons, OUA finalists, are seeded fourth. They compiled a 13-11-4 record in the regular season and went 6-3 in the playoffs.

Canada West finalist Saskatchewan Huskies are seeded fifth after going 25-3-0 during the regular season and 3-2 in the playoffs.

Sixth seeds are Atlantic finalist St. Francis Xavier X-Men who were 15-12-3 in league play and 5-5 in the playoffs.

Ontario bronze medalists Carleton Ravens are seeded seventh. They amassed an 18-5-5 record during the regular season and a 5-3 mark in the playoffs.

The host Lethbridge Pronghorns are seeded eighth. They were 9-17-2 during the regular season and lost both of their playoff games.

The Gryphs are to play Saskatchewan Thursday at 3 p.m. in the tournament’s opening game.

If they win that game, the Gryphs are to play Saturday in a semifinal. If they lose, they’re out.

Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Medal games are to go Sunday, starting with the bronze-medal match at 3 p.m. and followed by the gold-medal game at 8 p.m.
