Gryphon hockey men shut down Windsor Lancers
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons held the Windsor Lancers scoreless for more than 55 minutes as they clouted the Lancers 7-1 in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night at the Gryphon Centre.
The Gryphs led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 5-0 after the second. They added two more goals in the first seven minutes of the third, but Windsor connected for a power-play goal with 4:39 to play to ruin the shutout bid by Gryphon netminder Brendan Cregan.
Zach Poirier scored a pair of unassisted goals for the Gryphs while Ted Nichol, Connor Bramwell, Marc Stevens, Mikkel Aagaard and Gio Finoro each had single goals. Zach McFadden and Stephen Templeton collected two assists apiece while Aagaard, Ryan Valentini, Bobby Dow, Todd Winder and Luke Kutkevicius each had one assist.
Sean Olson scored the lone goal for Windsor with help from Kody Gagnon and Connor Logan.
The Gryphs outshot Windsor 35-27 including a 13-6 advantage in the first period. Both teams had a power-play goal, the Gryphs on three power plays and Windsor on four.
Cregan had 26 saves in the Gryphon net. Jonathan Reinhart started for Windsor and had 23 saves while Tyler Johnson had five saves in the third period.
The Gryphs are third in the West Division at 16-6-4-1 and Windsor is fourth at 14-9-0-2.
Both teams have clinched playoff berths and the Gryphs can finish no lower than third.
The Gryphs are to wrap up their regular season with a home game against the division-leading Toronto Varsity Blues (20-3-2-0) Friday at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
