Gryphon hockey men slow out of gates in loss to Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Guelph Gryphons gave up three goals in the opening period in Sunday’s 5-2 loss to the Colgate Raiders in university men’s preseason hockey play at Colgate’s Class of 1965 Arena.

The Raiders, an NCAA Division 1 team that plays in ECAC Hockey, led 3-0 at the end of the opening period and 3-1 after the second.

Todd Winder and Matt Kenney scored the goals for the Gryphs while assists were awarded to Zach McFadden, Scott Simmonds and Spencer Herbst.

Jeff Stewart, Jacob Panetta, Trevor Cosgrove, Bobby McMann and Adam Dauda hit for single goals for Colgate while Dauda had two assists and Griffin Lunn, McMann, Henry Marshall, Tyler Penner, Cosgrove, John Snodgrass and Paul Meyer each had one.

Colgate outshot the Gryphs 38-22 including a 15-8 advantage in the first period and both teams were 1-for-6 on their power plays.

Andrew Masters made 33 saves in the Gryphon net while Mitch Benson and Andrew Farrier split time in Colgate’s net. Benson made 13 saves in the first half of the game and Farrier made seven in the final half.

The game was the final one of the preseason for the Gryphs who finish at 2-4-0 while it was Colgate’s first game of its preseason.

The Gryphs are to open their regular season Thursday when they host the Ryerson Rams at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
