Gryphon hockey men sunk by Brock in overtime

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a goal less than a minute and a half into overtime to suffer a 4-3 loss to the Brock Badgers in OUA men’s hockey play Thursday night at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre.

The goal capped a comeback by the host Badgers after the Gryphs had come back from an early deficit. The Badgers led 2-0 early in the second period before the Gryphs scored three in a row to go ahead. Brock tied it at 8:36 of the third to eventually force the overtime.

Brock scored once in each period while all three of Guelph’s goals came in the second.

Ryan Da Silva, Todd Winder and Mikkel Aagaard scored a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Aagaard and Ted Nichol each had two assists and Zach McFadden had one.

The Badgers received goals from Ayden MacDonald, Brayden Stortz, Connor Brown and Christian Girhiny with the game-winner. Brown assisted on two of the goals and Stortz, MacDonald, Ryan Burton, Tyler Rollo, Frank Pucci and Dexter Weber each had one assist.

The Gryphs outshot the Badgers 45-43 and neither team scored a power-play goal as both teams had a single power play in the match.

Brendan Cregan, making his third consecutive start, took the overtime loss in net for the Gryphs. He had 39 saves while winning netminder Mario Culina had 42 saves.

The overtime loss was Guelph’s fourth of the season.

Guelph is third in the West Division standings at 11-4-4-1 while Brock is fifth at 11-8-1-0.

The Gryphs are to host the West Division-leading Toronto Varsity Blues (16-2-1-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and play the Badgers at St. Catharines again next Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
