Gryphon hockey men take annual Steel Blade Classic

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s hockey preseason Friday night with a 4-1 victory over the Brock Badgers in the annual Steel Blade Classic at the Meridian Centre.

The game attracted a sold-out crowd of 4,752.

The teams battled scoreless throughout the opening period before the Gryphs netted three goals in the second period. The lone Brock goal came in the third before the Gryphs added a goal later in the period to complete the scoring.

Connor Bramwell, Stephen Templeton, Giordano Finoro and Andrew Dodson had a goal apiece for Guelph.

Jordan Sambrook connected for the lone goal for Brock.

The two teams are to meet again Sept. 21 at the Port Dover arena in the first Dover Coast Cup match. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Gryphs have four preseason games this season, none of them at the Gryphon Centre.

With their first two OUA league games on the road and their annual trip into the U.S. to play a pair of NCAA squads, the Gryphs will have played eight games before their season debut at home against the York Lions Oct. 12.
