Gryphon hockey men topped by Toronto
TORONTO – The lack of a scoring touch continues to plague the Guelph Gryphons in OUA men’s hockey play as they dropped a 3-1 contest to the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night at Toronto’s Varsity Arena.
The hosts led 2-1 at the end of the first period and added the game’s only other goal in the third period – an empty-netter with 26 seconds to play.
The Gryphs outshot Toronto 37-29, but had only a goal by Nick Boyer to show for it. Scott Simmonds assisted on the goal.
Aidan Wallace, Matt Campagna and Joey Manchurek had the goals for Toronto while Manchurek also had two assists. David Thomson had one assist.
Alex Bishop made 36 saves to get the win in net for Toronto while Andrew Masters took the loss for the Gryphs. He had 26 saves.
While the Gryphs have added forward Ryan Valentini and defencemen Matt Timms and Justin Lemcke to the lineup since the exam and Christmas break, they’ve also lost goaltender Evan Cormier who has joined the Binghamton Devils of the American Hockey League. He has a 4-1-0 record with a shutout in six outings with Binghamton.
The loss leaves the Gryphs (7-10-3-3) in a tie with the Laurier Golden Hawks (8-11-1-1) for eighth in the West Division. Toronto is 10th at 6-11-4-4 as the Varsity Blues broke a four-game losing streak with the win. It was also Toronto’s first win at home this season.
The Gryphs will be back in Toronto Thursday for a 7:15 p.m. game with the Ryerson Rams (14-5-1-1) at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
