Gryphon hockey men toppled by Lakehead

THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered the final three goals of the game as they were handed a 4-1 setback by the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA men’s hockey league play Saturday night at the Fort William Arena.

Lakehead scored the only goal of the first period before the Gryphs tied it early in the second. The Thunderwolves went ahead for good with a pair of goals 52 seconds apart later in the second and they completed the scoring with the lone goal of the third.

Andres Kopstals scored the lone goal for Guelph while Seth Swenson and Justin Lemcke drew assists on the play.

Scoring for Lakehead were Daniel Del Paggio, Caleb Boman, Dexter Kuczek and Scott Gall. Josh Laframboise had a pair of assists while Brennen Dubchak, Jordan King, Dillon Donnelly and Dylan Butler had one each.

Andrew Masters took the loss in net for the Gryphs. He had 28 saves while winning goaltender Devin Green had 35 saves for Lakehead.

The Thunderwolves were 2-for-7 on their power play while the Gryphs were scoreless on six power plays.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, none of the 10 teams in the West Division have been knocked out of the hunt for a playoff berth. Six points separate third in the division from 10th. The top three – Ryerson Rams (18-5-3), Brock Badgers (17-5-3) and Western Mustangs (14-11-1) – have clinched playoff berths.

The Gryphs (11-11-4) are in a three-way tie for fourth with the York Lions (12-11-2) and Windsor Lancers (13-13-0). They’re followed by the Laurier Golden Hawks (12-13-1), Toronto Varsity Blues (10-12-4), Lakehead (11-14-1) and Waterloo Warriors (9-12-5).

The Gryphs are scheduled to complete their regular season with a pair of games at the Gryphon Centre as they’re to host Toronto Thursday and Windsor Saturday. Both games carry 7:30 p.m. game times.
