Gryphon hockey men win on Valentini OT goal

TORONTO – Ryan Valentini’s goal with 28 seconds to go in overtime lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 4-3 victory over the Ryerson Rams in OUA men’s hockey play Thursday night.

The win was Guelph’s second of 2019 and its second in two weeks at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs had trailed 2-0 in Thursday’s game, but rallied to take the lead midway through the third. A goal by the Rams with 4:02 to go in regulation time forced the overtime.

Connor Bramwell scored twice for the Gryphs in the third period, the first one coming on a penalty shot and the second one 72 seconds later with the teams playing at full strength. Tryg Strand scored the other goal while Andres Kopstals, Matt Timms, Valentini and Justin Lemcke each had an assist.

Mark Shoemaker, Alex Basso and Mathew Santos had a goal apiece for Ryerson. Assists went to David Miller, Steven Harland, John Carpino, Vince Figliomeni, Matt Mistele and Gregory DiTomaso.

The Gryphs outshot Ryerson 40-32 overall and 7-2 in the overtime. Guelph had two power plays and in the game and Ryerson one and neither team netted a power-play marker.

Andrew Masters picked up the win in the Guelph net while Troy Timpano took the loss in the Ryerson net.

The Gryphs (8-10-3-3) are tied for seventh in the West Division with the Waterloo Warriors (7-10-5-5) while Ryerson (14-5-2-2) is second.

The Gryphs are to host the Western Mustangs (12-7-1-1) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre. Guelph’s annual Frosty Mug game is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre when they’re to play the Laurier Golden Hawks (8-11-1-1).
