Gryphon hockey men’s quick trio helps down Ryerson

TORONTO – Three goals in a span of just over five minutes of the first period started the Guelph Gryphons on their way to a 6-2 victory over the Ryerson Rams in OUA men’s hockey league play Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The win put an end to Guelph’s two-game losing streak and was the fifth in eight games for the Gryphs. It was also Ryerson’s fourth consecutive setback.

The Gryphs led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second.

Ryan Valentini and Cody Thompson scored twice apiece for the Gryphs while Scott Simmonds and Stephen Hiff added single goals. Simmonds also had two assists while Reilly O’Connor, Marc Stevens, Cody Thompson, Tryg Strand, Connor Bramwell and Todd Winder had one apiece.

Patrick Fellows and Matt Mistele scored for Ryerson. Assists went to Zachary Shankar, John Carpino, Marcus Hinds and Cavin Leth.

The Gryphs outshot Ryerson 33-28 and neither team scored on its power play – Ryerson having four and Guelph two.

Andrew Masters stopped 26 shots for the win in the Guelph net while starter Garrett Forrest took the loss as he allowed the three first-period goals by the Gryphs. Taylor Dupuis relieved and went the rest of the way, giving up three goals on 21 shots.

The Gryphs are tied for seventh in the West Division at 7-9-2-2 while Ryerson is second at 12-5-1-1.

The Gryphs are to host the York Lions (10-6-2-2) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
