Gryphon hockey women add to their win streak

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons stretched their win streak to seven games with a 4-3 victory in overtime over the Toronto Varsity Blues Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre.

Miranda Lantz’s goal with 11 seconds to go in a three-on-three overtime period gave Guelph the win.

The Gryphs never trailed in the game, but never led by more than a goal. The score was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period before a scoreless second.

Claire Merrick had a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Molly Crossman also scored. Assists went to Kelly Gribbons, Kristen Jay, Cyan Roepcke, Ashlee Lawrence and Mallory Young.

Stephanie Ayres, Mathilde De Serres and Kassie Roache had a goal apiece for Toronto. Rebecca Bourgeois and Julia Szulewska each had two assists and St. James graduate Louie Bieman and Ayres each had one assist.

Valerie Lamenta made 24 saves in the Guelph net to get the win while Valencia Yordanov made 20 saves for Toronto.

Both teams were scoreless on their power plays, the Gryphs getting five of them and Toronto four.

The win leaves the Gryphs at 10-3-4-0 while Toronto falls to 9-0-7-2.

The Gryphs have seven games to go in their regular season, the first three at the Gryphon Centre and the other four on the road. They’re to host the Queen’s Gaels (10-3-2-3) in a battle of the league’s first- and second-placed teams Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
