Gryphon hockey women blank Brock again
ST. CATHARINES – Claire Merrick of the Guelph Gryphons was a Badger beater in the Gryphs’ OUA women’s hockey league quarter-finals.
Merrick, who had two goals and an assist in the series opener Wednesday, scored the only goal of Game 2 as the Gryphs edged the Brock Badgers 1-0 to sweep the best-of-three series.
Merrick was the only player in the game to pick up a point as her goal at 13:31 of the first period came on an unassisted effort.
Valerie Lamenta stopped 22 shots for her second shutout of the series. Guelph won the opener 5-0.
Jensen Murphy faced 31 shots in the Brock net.
Neither team connected on its power play as Brock had four power plays and the Gryphs had five.
The Gryphs are the first team to post a series win in the quarter-finals.
As the first-place finisher at the end of the regular season, the Gryphs will play the lowest-placed quarter-final winner in next week’s semifinals.
