Gryphon hockey women blank Laurier to finish regular season

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons completed the regular-season portion of their OUA women’s hockey season Friday night with a 2-0 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

It was Guelph’s fourth consecutive win and sixth in seven games. The loss was in overtime to the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Gryphon Centre Feb. 1.

The Gryphs scored single goals in the second and third period for Friday’s win.

Abby Davies tallied in the second period with help from Chihiro Suzuki while Tori Verbeek had an unassisted goal in the third, her 11th goal of the season and sixth in seven games.

Martina Fedel recorded her sixth shutout of the season with 14 saves while her teammates took 32 at the Laurier net guarded by Victoria Kelaiditis.

The Gryphs were scoreless on four power plays while Laurier was scoreless on three.

The Gryphs finish second in the West Division at 18-4-3-2. Waterloo Warriors finish first at 21-5-0-1 while the third-place Windsor Lancers (15-10-1-0) and fourth-place Brock Badgers (11-11-3-1) are the division’s other playoff qualifiers. Western Mustangs (9-14-3-1) and Laurier (4-17-3-2) will miss the playoffs.

Qualifying for the playoffs from the East Division are Toronto (22-2-2-0), Nipissing Lakers (18-4-3-0), Queen’s Gaels (12-10-3-1) and Toronto Metropolitan Bold (10-12-4-0).

The Gryphs and Windsor are to meet in a best-of-three quarter-final series next week with the Gryphs getting home-ice advantage. Waterloo is to play Brock in the other quarter-final involving West Division teams while the other two series have Toronto against Toronto Metropolitan and Nipissing against Queen’s.

The semifinals set for March 1 to 5 will be crossover series with the highest-ranked quarter-final winner from one division playing the lowest-ranked quarter-final winner from the other division in best-of-three series.

The McCaw Cup final is to be a single-game championship match March 11 played at the home of the highest-ranked semifinal victor.

The two McCaw Cup combatants are to advance to the U Sports national tournament at Montreal March 16 to 19.
