Gryphon hockey women blank Laurier to open season
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons began defence of their U Sports national women’s hockey title with a 4-0 blanking of the Laurier Golden Hawks in their OUA season opener Friday night at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex’s Sun Life Financial Arena.
The Gryphs secured the victory with a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the third period. Those goals completed the scoring in the game as Guelph had scored once in the first and once in the second.
Guelph actually held a lead they wouldn’t relinquish by the game’s two-minute mark.
Aurore Beaulieu recorded the shutout for the Gryphs as she turned aside all 14 shots directed her way.
Miranda Lantz, Lauren Ianni, Stephanie Gava and Mayla Mayer scored a goal apiece while Kristen Jay had three assists, Sydney Davison had two and Gabrielle Smyth and Karli Shell had one each.
Cohen Myers was tagged with the loss for Laurier. She faced 23 shots.
The Gryphs also went 1-for-6 on their power play while Laurier was scoreless on six power plays.
