Gryphon hockey women blank Western Mustangs

LONDON – Martina Fedel stopped all shots directed her way to get the shutout as the Guelph Gryphons blanked the Western Mustangs 2-0 in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday night at Western’s Thompson Arena.

The win was the second of the week over Western as the Gryphs had edged the Mustangs in overtime Wednesday at the Gryphon Centre.

Saturday, the Gryphs scored single goals in the second and third periods for the win.

Hannah Tait connected midway through the second for the eventual game-winning goal while Nicole MacKinnon added the other goal early in the third.

Jaime Magoffin, Madison Melo and Lauren Ianni each had an assist.

The Gryphs outshot Western 23-14 and both teams went 0-for-3 on their power plays.

Kaitlyn Booth was in net for the hosts.

Guelph, Brock Badgers and Waterloo Warriors are tied for the lead in the West Division with 2-0-0 records while the other three teams – Western, Laurier Golden Hawks and Windsor Lancers – are each at 0-2-0.

The Gryphs are to play Waterloo next week as they’re to meet Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphs Centre and next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Waterloo’s Columbia Ice Fields Arena.
