Gryphon hockey women blanked by Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – Finnish national team centre Emma Nuutinen was too much for the Guelph Gryphons as they were blanked 4-0 by the Mercyhurst Lakers in preseason university women’s hockey play Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Nuutinen, a senior who was a first-team all-conference all-star last season, was involved in all four goals as she scored three of them and assisted on the other one.

Rachel Marmen scored that other goal and also had an assist on one of Nuutinen’s goals. Sam Isbell and Michele Robillard also had one assist apiece.

Of Mercyhurst’s goals, two came on power plays and one was a shorthanded marker.

Mercyhurst went 2-for-4 on its power play while the Gryphs were 0-for-4 on their power play.

The Gryphs were outshot 40-14.

Aurore Beaulieu had 36 saves for the Gryphs while Blair Kennedy had 14 for Mercyhurst.

The Gryphs are 1-3-0 in the preseason while the game was Mercyhurst’s first of its preseason.

The Gryphs are to play the Laurier Golden Hawks in preseason games on back-to-back days next week. They’re to play at the Sun Life Financial Arena in the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Thursday at 7 p.m. and at the Gryphon Centre Friday at 2:30 p.m.
