Gryphon hockey women blanked by UOIT

OSHAWA – Jamie Bulleid’s goal early in the first period was the lone goal of the game as the Guelph Gryphons suffered a 1-0 loss to the UOIT Ridgebacks in OUA women’s hockey play Thursday night at UOIT’s Campus Ice Centre.

Nicole Zabel picked up an assist on the goal while Briar Hughes stopped 22 shots for the shutout.

Aurore Beaulieu made 19 saves, but was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net.

Both teams were held scoreless on their power plays, the Gryphs getting six power plays and UOIT getting five.

Guelph had a goal disallowed late in the third period as the referees ruled the Gryphs had interfered with Hughes.

It was the first time the Gryphs had lost to UOIT since dropping a 2-1 decision to the Ridgebacks in Oshawa Jan. 20, 2012.

The result leaves the seventh-ranked Gryphs at 1-0-2-0 and UOIT at 2-0-2-0.

The Gryphs are to play the Queen’s Gaels (2-0-0-1) at Kingston Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
