Gryphon hockey women break out against Waterloo

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons made it four wins in a row in OUA women’s hockey league play Saturday with a 5-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefields arena.

The Gryphs scored twice in each of the second and third periods for the victory. The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first as each netted a power-play goal in the opening period.

Karli Shell led the Gryphs with two goals and an assist while Katherine Bailey, Sydney Davison and Emma Forcey each had a goal and an assist. Claire Merrick collected two assists and Mallory Young, Miranda Lantz, Molly Crossman and Meagan Lee each had one assist.

Stephanie Digness scored for Waterloo while Angela MacDonald and Samantha Burbridge had assists on the play.

The Gryphs fired 33 shots on net in the game and held Waterloo to less than 10 shots in each period and 15 overall.

Valerie Lamenta was the winning netminder for Guelph while Stephanie Sluys was charged with the loss.

The Gryphs went 2-for-6 on the power play while Waterloo went 1-for-5.

The win lifts the Gryphs into a tie for third in the league with the Brock Badgers at 29 points. The Gryphs are at 9-1-4-0 and have a game in hand on Brock (7-3-3-2). Queen’s Gaels lead at 8-3-1-2 and 32 points and Western Mustangs are second at 9-1-3-2 and 31 points.

Waterloo is sixth at 6-2-5-0 and 22 points.

Next game for the Gryphs is a match against the York Lions (4-0-8-2) Thursday at the Gryphon Centre starting at 7:30 p.m.
