Gryphon hockey women break out to blank Lakers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons turned in their largest output of the season as they blanked the Nipissing Lakers 5-0 in OUA women’s hockey league play Sunday at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs scored single goals in the first and second periods before netting three in the third.

Valerie Lamenta stopped 21 shots for her second consecutive shutout. It was also the third straight shutout for the Gryphs who blanked the Laurier Golden Hawks 4-0 at Waterloo Nov. 5 and the Laurentian Voyageurs 2-0 at the Gryphon Centre (with Aurore Beaulieu in net) Saturday.

The Gryphs recorded 25 shots on net and Nipissing’s Danika Ranger stopped 20 of them in the loss.

Kaitlin Lowy, Claire Merrick, Karli Shell, Kelly Gribbons and Miranda Lantz scored the goals for the Gryphs while Cyan Roepcke assisted on two of them. Katherine Bailey, Gribbons, Lowy, Merrick, Mallory Young and Sydney Davison each had one assist.

The win moves the Gryphs into a tie for second with the Brock Badgers and Western Mustangs. The Gryphs are at 5-0-3-0 while the Badgers and Mustangs have identical 4-1-2-1 records. Nipissing falls to ninth in the 13-team league at 3-0-3-1.
