
Gryphon hockey women clobbered in season opener
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 6-1 loss to the Waterloo Warriors in their opening game of the OUA women’s hockey season Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.
Waterloo struck for two goals in each period while the lone Gryphon goal came with 3:48 to go in the game after the Warriors had scored their six goals.

Hannah Tait scored for the Gryphs while Tori Verbeek had an assist on the goal.
Kassidy McCarthy, Leah Herrfort, Madison Pritchard, Keiara Raitt, Megan Dyck and Carly Orth had a goal apiece for Waterloo. Emma Cheeseman and McCarthy each had two assists while Raitt, Tatum James and Carley Olivier had one each.
The Warriors outshot the Gryphs 27-17.
Martina Fedel had 21 saves for the Gryphs while Mikayla Schnarr had 16 for Waterloo.
The Warriors were scoreless on five power plays while the Gryphs were scoreless on two.
The Gryphs are to begin a stretch of four consecutive road games Saturday when they’re to play the Brock Badgers at the Canada Games arena in St. Catharines in Brock’s season opener. Game time is 4 p.m.
