Gryphon hockey women clout Laurentian

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons had their largest offensive out put in eight years as they clobbered the Laurentian Voyageurs 9-1 in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

That equaled their goal total in a 9-3 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks in OUA play at home Nov. 12, 2010.

The output included three goals in a span 45 seconds in the third period. The Gryphs led 2-0 at the end of the first and 5-0 after the second.

Lauren Ianni, Sydney Davison and Miranda Lantz each scored twice for the Gryphs while single goals were added by Katie Mikkelsen, Ashlee Lawrence and Kristen Jay. Kaitlin Lowy had three assists while Claire Merrick, Stephanie Gava, Laura Crowdis and Karli Shell had two apiece and Mallory Young, Chantal Gudbranson and Davison had one each.

Carley Olivier scored 92 seconds into the third period while Myla McCormick and Karissa Hoskin assisted on the goal.

The Gryphs outshot the Voyageurs 49-23 and went 2-for-4 on their power play while Laurentian was scoreless on two power plays.

Aurore Beaulieu had 22 saves in net for the win for the Gryphs while Laurentian starter Karen Collins took the loss with 14 saves in 26:47. Shanna Dolighan relieved and had 26 saves the rest of the way.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Gryphs and left them second in the standings at 5-1-1-0. They’re a point behind the leading Queen’s Gaels who are at 6-2-0-0 and have played one more game than the Gryphs.

Laurentian is tied for fourth in the 13-team league at 3-3-1-2.

The Gryphs are to host the seventh-place Nipissing Lakers (2-3-3-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
