Gryphon hockey women doubled by Nipissing

NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered three goals in the final nine minutes of the game as they were doubled 6-3 by the Nipissing Lakers in OUA women’s hockey league play Friday at the North Bay Memorial Gardens.

Nipissing led 2-1 at the end of the first period and scored the only goal of the second before the Gryphs battled back to tie it with a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the third.

However, the tie lasted less than three minutes before Nipissing shot ahead for good.

Claire Merrick, Kaitlin Lowy and Kelly Gribbons had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while assists were awarded to Karli Shell, Gribbons and Miranda Lantz.

Maria Dominico had a hat trick for Nipissing while single goals were netted by Bronwyn Bolduc, Jade Gauthier and Katekyn Heppner. Sam Strassburger assisted on two of the goals while Gauthier, Madison Solie, Bolduc, Kaley Tienhaara and Zosia Davis each had one assist.

Nipissing outshot the Gryphs 25-17.

Valerie Lamenta took the loss in net for the Gryphs while Jackie Rochefort claimed the win for Nipissing.

The Gryphs went 2-for-5 on their power play while Nipissing went 1-for-2.

The loss put an end to Guelph’s hopes of finishing first in the 13-team league. With two games to go, they’re third at 12-4-6-0 while the Queen’s Gaels lead at 14-3-3-3. Nipissing is tied for fifth at 11-2-6-2.

The Gryphs are to play the ninth-place Laurentian Voyageurs (8-1-8-3) at Sudbury’s Countryside Arena Saturday at 3:50 p.m. The Voyageurs have four games to play and are a point out of a playoff position.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Feb. 17 against the Ryerson Rams (9-5-5-2) at the Mattamy Athletics Centre.
