Gryphon hockey women down Moncton to start preseason
MONTREAL – The defending national champion Guelph Gryphons struck for four goals in the third period as they opened their university women’s hockey preseason with a 5-1 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleues at Montreal’s McConnell Arena Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, Moncton opened the scoring 61 seconds into the second period.
The Gryphs got that one back later in the second then claimed the win with their third-period scoring.
Emma Forcey, Mayla Mayer, Miranda Lantz, Karli Shell (on a penalty shot) and Nicole MacKinnon each scored for the Gryphs. Madison Melo collected two assists while single helpers were awarded to Gabrielle Smyth, Molly Crossman, Hannah Tait, Madelaine Wood, Shell and Mayer.
Katherine Dubuc had an unassisted goal for Moncton.
The Gryphs outshot Moncton 37-24 and went 1-for-3 on their power play. The locals also held Moncton scoreless on three power plays.
Kathryn Raymond and Alexandrea Davidson split the goaltending chores with each playing approximately half the game. Raymond started and stopped 12 shots in her stint while Davidson had 11 saves.
The Gryphs are to play the McGill Martlets in Montreal Sunday at 2 p.m. McGill defeated Moncton 4-1 Friday night.
The Gryphs have five other games on their preseason schedule including games at the Gryphon Centre against the Laurier Golden Hawks Sept. 27 and Waterloo Warriors Oct. 10.
They’re to open their OUA regular season against Laurier Oct. 18 at Waterloo while their home opener is set for Oct. 19 against Waterloo.
