Gryphon hockey women downed by Brock Badgers
ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons tumbled to sixth in the OUA women’s hockey league’s standings after losing 3-1 to the Brock Badgers Thursday night at Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The teams were tied at the end of the first period before Brock scored single goals in the second and third periods.
Gabby Smyth had an unassisted goal for the Gryphs with 1:14 to go in the first period.
Annie Berg opened and closed the scoring in the game with a pair of unassisted goals. Cassidy Maplethorpe scored the other goal for Brock while Morgan Dezell and Kaitlyn Colonna assisted on the goal.
The Gryphs outshot Brock 35-30. The Badgers went 1-for-4 on their power play while the Gryphs were scoreless on three power plays.
Aurore Beaulieu had 27 saves in the Gryphon net while Jensen Murphy had 34 saves for Brock.
Guelph is sixth in the standings at 9-6-1-3 while Brock moved to fifth at 10-6-1-2.
The Ryerson Rams (9-7-1-1) are seventh and followed by the Western Mustangs (7-6-3-2) in eighth, Queen’s Gaels (7-8-3-1) in ninth and Laurentian Voyageurs (6-8-2-3) in 10th. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.
The Gryphs have five games to play in their regular season starting with a match Friday against Ryerson at Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
