Gryphon hockey women downed by Waterloo in preseason

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 5-3 setback to the Waterloo Warriors in OUA women’s hockey preseason play Thursday night at the Columbia Icefields arena.

The Gryphs never led in the match as the score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Waterloo led 3-2 after the second.

Gabby Smyth, Miranda Lantz and Maddie Wood collected a goal apiece for the Gryphs.

Waterloo’s goals were scored by Sarah Rettinger, Alison Hanson, Cynthia Cavanagh, Madison Pritchard and Brooklyn Sarnovsky.

The teams each had 29 shots on net.

The Gryphs are 1-2-0 in their preseason.

They’re to play the NCAA’s Mercyhurst Lakers at Erie, Pa., Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.

Including Saturday’s game, the Gryphs have four preseason games to go before they open their regular season Oct. 18 against the Laurier Golden Hawks at Waterloo.
