
Gryphon hockey women drop series opener in overtime
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons find themselves on the brink of elimination in the OUA women’s hockey quarter-finals after being edged 1-0 in double overtime in the series opener Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre.
Windsor scored the game’s only goal at 7:19 of the second overtime.

Emily Eikelboom netted the game’s only goal on Windsor’s 27th shot of the match.
The Gryphs carried for most of the game after the opening period as they took 38 shots, all stopped by Windsor goalie Kristen Swiatoschik.
The Lancers outshot the Gryphs 10-5 in the first period while the Gryphs outshot their guests 33-17 the rest of the way.
Guelph had finished the regular season second in the West Division at 18-4-3-2 while Windsor was third at 15-11-1-0.
However, the Lancers had taken two of their three regular-season matches with the Gryphs. Windsor won 2-1 at the Gryphon Centre Nov. 11 and 3-2 in overtime at Windsor Nov. 26, the night after the Gryphs had won 4-1 at Windsor.
Wednesday’s game was the ninth Gryphon game that went beyond regulation time and the Gryphs lost six of those games.
Second game of the best-of-three quarter-final is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
If the Gryphs win Saturday, the Gryphs are to host the third and deciding game Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
