Gryphon hockey women edged by Queen’s
KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their second consecutive loss in the OUA women’s hockey league Saturday when they were edged 3-1 by the Queen’s Gaels at the Kingston Memorial Arena.
The Gaels struck for two goals in the first eight minutes of the game, one a power-play goal scored while the Gryphs had two players in the penalty box. The Gryphs responded with their lone goal in the second period and Queen’s wrapped up the scoring with an empty-net goal with 12 seconds to go in the game.
Kelly Gribbons scored for the Gryphs while Karli Shell and Claire Merrick assisted on the goal.
Katrina Manoukarakis, Micaela Smith and Addi Halladay scored the goals for Queen’s while assists were awarded to Clare McKellar, Abby Lafreniere, Jessica Wakefield, Smith and Emily Gervais.
Queen’s outshot Guelph 33-31 while Stephanie Pascal was the winning netminder for Queen’s and Valerie Lamenta was charged with the loss for the Gryphs.
The loss leaves the Gryphs at 1-0-3-0 while the Gaels lead the league at 3-0-0-1.
Next outing for the Gryphs is a match against the Windsor Lancers (0-0-4-0) Friday at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
