Gryphon hockey women edged by Toronto in overtime
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons recovered from an early two-goal deficit to take the Toronto Varsity Blues to overtime where they suffered a 3-2 loss in the opening game of their best-of-three OUA women’s hockey quarter-final playoff series.
Toronto led 2-1 at the end of the first period and the Gryphs tied it in the second before a scoreless third.
Gabrielle De Serres scored the winner for Toronto after just over 17 minutes of overtime.
Gabrielle De Serres and Cristine Chao scored in the first 14 minutes for the Varsity Blues while assists went to Mathilde De Serres, Jana Headrick, Chao and Lauren MacDonnell.
Lauren Ianni and Stephanie Gava struck for the goals for the Gryphs while Gabriele Underwood and Gabby Smyth had assists.
The Gryphs were outshot 47-31 and went 1-for-4 on their power play while Toronto was scoreless on eight power plays.
Aurore Beaulieu had 44 saves for the Gryphs while Erica Fryer had 29 saves for the Varsity Blues.
The Gryphs finished eighth at the completion of the regular season at 10-8-2-4 while Toronto was first at 17-4-1-2.
Second game of the best-of-three series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
If the Gryphs win that game, the third game of the series is to be played at Toronto’s Varsity Arena Sunday at 7 p.m.
