Gryphon hockey women edged by Vermont

MONTREAL – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime to the NCAA’s Vermont Catamounts Saturday in the Theresa Humes Invitational university women’s hockey tournament hosted by the Concordia Stingers.

Cyan Roepcke scored for the Gryphs three minutes into the second period in the game played at Montreal’s Ed Meagher arena.

Vermont tied the score with a power-play goal by Taylor Willard less than two and a half minutes into the third and won it on a goal by Alyssa Gorecki 50 seconds into overtime.

The Guelph squad is to complete its tournament play with a game against the McGill Martlets Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Gryphs are to return to OUA league play Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. game against the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Gryphon Centre. The Gryphs are fourth in the 13-team league at 7-1-4-0 and Laurier is 13th at 1-1-8-1.

Guelph defeated Laurier 4-0 at Waterloo Nov. 5.
