Gryphon hockey women edged, Ryerson climbs to top of league
GUELPH – A power-play goal late in the second period proved to be the winner as the Guelph Gryphons were edged 3-2 by the league-leading Ryerson Rams in OUA women’s hockey play Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre.
The lone goal of the second period, it extended Ryerson’s lead to 3-1. The Gryphs closed the gap with a goal with 2:53 to go in the third.
Claire Merrick and Miranda Lantz scored for the hosts while assists went to Kaitlin Lowy, Kristen Jay and Chantal Gudbranson.
Mariah Hinds, Erika Crouse and Lauren Nicholson netted a goal apiece for Ryerson. Crouse, Natalie Pantaleo, Madison Lalonde and Brooklyn Gemmill each had an assist.
Ryerson outshot the Gryphs 27-24 thanks to a 25-8 margin through the first two periods.
The Gryphs pressed in the third, outshooting the Rams 16-2, but goaltender Fanny Vigeant held on for the win in the Ryerson net. Valerie Lamenta was charged with the loss in the Guelph net.
The Gryphs were scoreless on two power plays while Ryerson went 1-for-4 on its power play.
Ryerson vaults to the top of the league’s standings at 6-2-2-0 with the win while the Gryphs are fifth at 5-2-1-1.
The loss was the second in a row, both on home ice, as the Gryphs had been edged 2-1 in overtime by the third-place Nipissing Lakers (4-3-4-0) Nov. 11.
The Gryphs have two games remaining in the 2018 portion of their season, both on the road. They’re to play the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-4-0-1) Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Brock Badgers (4-1-1-2) Nov. 29 at 7:15 p.m.
