Gryphon hockey women erupt in third for win
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored four times in the third period to drop the York Lions 4-1 in OUA women’s hockey league play Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre.
The Lions had scored the only goal of the first before a scoreless second.
Miranda Lantz scored two of Guelph’s goals while Karli Shell and Kaitlin Lowy added one apiece. Kristen Jay assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Meagan Lee, Cyan Roepcke, Stephanie Gava and Mallory Young.
Courtney Gardiner scored for York 10 seconds after serving a minor penalty while Tegan Duncan set up the play.
Aurore Beaulieu turned aside 26 shots for the win in the Gryphon net while Lauren Dubie had 17 saves for York.
Both teams were scoreless on their power plays, Guelph on five and York on three.
The win keeps the Gryphs in top spot in the OUA loop at 11-2-1-2. York is ninth at 4-8-3-1.
The Gryphs are to host the Laurier Golden Hawks (3-12-0-1) Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Gryphons Centre in their second of four consecutive home games. They’re also to host the UOIT Ridgebacks (6-9-0-1) Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. and Queen’s Gaels (9-7-0-0) Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
