Gryphon hockey women fall to NCAA’s Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Guelph Gryphons yielded three goals in the first period as they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Quinnipiac Bobcats in preseason women’s university hockey play Saturday at the Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
All but a third-period goal by Quinnipiac was scored in the first as the host Bobcats led 3-1 before a scoreless second.
Kaitlin Lowy scored the lone goal for the Gryphs at 14:14 of the first period. Claire Merrick assisted on the goal that cut Quinnipiac’s lead to 2-1 at the time.
Melissa Samoskevich had two goals for Quinnipiac while Grace Markey and Courtney Vorster had one apiece.
Neither team scored on its power play, the Gryphons getting two power plays and Quinnipiac getting four.
Valerie Lamenta was in net for the Gryphs and she made 25 saves. According to Quinnipiac stats, the Gryphons had three shots on net.
The Gryphs have lost all three of their preseason games. They have four more to play before they’re to open their regular season against the Laurier Golden Hawks at Waterloo Oct. 19.
Next preseason game for the Gryphs is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre when they’re to host the Carleton Ravens.
