Gryphon hockey women force quarter-final to limit

WINDSOR – Martina Fedel kept the Windsor Lancers scoreless through regulation time for the second consecutive OUA women’s hockey playoff match and she got the win this time as her Guelph Gryphons posted a 3-0 victory Saturday at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.

The result squares the best-of-three quarter-final series at a win apiece and sets up a do-or-die situation for Game 3 Sunday at the Gryphon Centre.

Maya Graham in the first and Hannah Tait and Jaime Magoffin 10 minutes apart in the second accounted for the goals. Meaghan Chittick assisted on two of the goals while Magoffin, Tori Verbeek, Brielle Caruso and Sydnie Miller each had one assist.

Fedel stopped 21 shots to get the shutout while her teammates fired 32 at the Windsor net guarded by Kristen Swiatoschik who had picked up the shutout win in Windsor’s victory in double overtime in the series opener Wednesday at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs were scoreless on two power plays Saturday while Windsor was scoreless on four.

Windsor had won two of the three regular-season meetings with the Gryphs with one of the wins coming in overtime.

Guelph finished the regular season second in the West Division at 18-4-3-2 while the Lancers were third at 15-11-1-0.

The Waterloo Warriors (first in West Division at 21-5-0-1), Toronto Varsity Blues (first in East Division at 23-2-2-0) and Nipissing Lakers (second in East Division at 19-4-3-0) have won their quarter-final series and advance to the semifinals.

Winner of Sunday’s Guelph-Windsor match will play Toronto in the best-of-three semifinal and the Varsity Blues will have home-ice advantage.

Waterloo and Nipissing will meet in the other semifinal with the third game being played at Waterloo if it’s needed.

Semifinal victors advance to the single-game McCaw Cup championship match March 11 at the home of the semifinal winner with the best regular-season record. They’ll also gain berths in the U Sports national championship tournament at Montreal March 16 to 19.

Sunday’s game at the Gryphon Centre is to start at 2:30 p.m.
