Gryphon hockey women hit in second to double Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons struck for three second-period goals in a span of just less than four minutes as they doubled the Windsor Lancers 4-2 in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at Windsor’s Captri Pizzeria Recreation Centre.

The win gave the Gryphs a sweep of the four-game regular-season series with the Lancers.

The trio of goals in the second period allowed the Gryphs to come back to grab the lead after Windsor had scored the lone goal of the first period. The Gryphs led 3-2 at the end of the second and added a power-play goal in the third to wrap up the scoring.

Jaime Magoffin had a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Brielle Caruso and Katherine Heard added single goals. Rylee Davison and Meaghan Chittick each had two assists while single assists were given to Tori Verbeek, Magoffin and Gabriele Underwood.

Elizabeth Coleman and Maggie Peterson scored for Windsor while Emily Eikelboom, Rorie Ringor and Jaden Cherry picked up assists.

The Gryphs outshot the Lancers 29-22. Guelph also went 2-for-4 on its power play while Windsor was scoreless on two power plays.

Guelph netminder Martina Fedel saw her shutout streak come to an end at four games, but she made 20 saves. Windsor’s pair of goals doubled the number Fedel has allowed this season and were the first since she yielded two goals in a preseason match with the Toronto Varsity Blues Oct. 27.

Kristen Swiatochik had 22 saves for Windsor while Jaydlin Spooner had three in a short appearance in the first period.

Next league action for the Gryphs is Feb. 23 when they’re to host the Brock Badgers at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
