Gryphon hockey women hit late for victory
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons scored twice in the final six minutes of the game to put an end to their two-game losing streak in OUA women’s hockey play with a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night at Varsity Arena.
The teams had scored once apiece in the first period before a scoreless second.
Miranda Lantz’s goal with 5:54 to go in regulation time proved to be the game-winner while Lauren Ianni added an empty-netter with four seconds to play.
Molly Crossman scored in the first for the Gryphs. Chantal Gudbranson and Stephanie Gava each had an assist in the game for Guelph.
Kassie Roache hit for a power-play goal for Toronto with 17 seconds to go in the first period. Assists on the play went to Lauren Straatman and Cristine Chao.
The Gryphs outshot the Varsity Blues 30-20. Guelph was scoreless on eight power plays while Toronto went 1-for-7 on its power play.
Valerie Lamenta had 19 saves in net for the win for the Gryphs while Erica Fryer had 27 saves for Toronto.
The Gryphs move up into a three-way tie for fourth at 6-2-1-1. They’re tied with the Waterloo Warriors (6-2-1-1) and Nipissing Lakers (4-3-4-1). Toronto (5-5-0-1) is in a tie for eighth with the UOIT Ridgebacks (5-6-0-1).
The Gryphs are to complete the 2018 portion of their schedule with a game against the Brock Badgers (4-1-3-2) Thursday at the Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
