Gryphon hockey women leave Ridgebacks behind

OSHAWA – Three goals in the second period sparked the Guelph Gryphons to a 4-1 victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at Ontario Tech’s Campus Ice Centre.

The teams had scored a goal apiece in the first period while the third was scoreless.

Jaime Magoffin, Chihiro Suzuki, Teghan MacRae and Avery Peer had a goal apiece for the Gryphs while assists went to Hannah Tait, Peer, Sylvie-Ann Miller, Abby Davies, Alexie Olivier, Magoffin and Meaghan Chittick.

Nicole Escano scored a poiwer-play goal for Ontario Tech with 16 seconds to go in the opening period. Mackenzie Krasowski and Erin Ross assisted on the goal.

The Gryphs outshot the Ridgebacks 31-12 and went 2-for-7 on their power play while Ontario Tech went 1-for-4.

Martina Fedel picked up the win in the Guelph net with 11 saves while Brooke Vial had 27 saves for Ontario Tech.

The Gryphs are tied for second in the West Division at 2-1-0-1 while Ontario Tech is third in the East Division at 2-2-0-0.

The Gryphs are to play the Western Mustangs (2-1-0-1) at Western’s Thompson Arena Friday at 7 p.m. and host the Queen’s Gaels (1-2-0-1) next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
