Gryphon hockey women net quick pair in third for victory

GUELPH – A pair of goals just over a minute apart early in the third period sparked the Guelph Gryphons to a 4-2 victory over the Windsor Lancers in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

Stephanie Gava and Kaitlin Lowy scored 64 seconds apart to lift the Gryphs to a 4-1 lead at the time.

The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Gryphs scored the only goal of the second.

Kristen Jay and Molly Crossman also scored for the Gryphs. Laura Crowdis assisted on two of the goals while Cyan Roepcke, Sophie Rodenburg, Lauren Ianni, Claire Merrick and Karli Shell each had one assist.

Ashley Maitre and Rachel Chantler responded with single goals for Windsor while assists were awarded to Hayley Douglas, Samantha Spagnol, Ashley Maitre and Dakota Rouse.

Aurore Beaulieu made 28 saves in the win for Gryphs while Spooner made 31 in the loss for Windsor.

The Gryphs were 0-for-5 on their power play while Windsor was scoreless in six power plays.

The win lifts the Gryphs to 2-1-1-0 while the Lancers have lost all five games they’ve played this season.

The Gryphs are to play the York Lions at York’s Canlan Ice Sports facility Wednesday at 7 p.m.
