Gryphon hockey women nip TMU in OT

GUELPH – Avery Peer’s goal in overtime lifted the Guelph Gryphons to their fifth consecutive victory in OUA women’s hockey play Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre.

Peer’s goal at 5:22 of the extra period gave the Gryphs a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Metropolitan Bold to keep the locals undefeated in 2023. It was also the fourth consecutive single-goal victory for Guelph and followed three straight 2-1 wins one in a shootout.

The Gryphs never trailed in the game and never led by more than a goal.

The hosts were up 1-0 at the end of the first period and 2-1 after the second before TMU scored the lone goal of the third.

Jaime Magoffin and Rylee Davison scored for Guelph in regulation time. Tori Verbeek and Magoffin each had two assists while Skylar Brown and Peer each had one.

Abby DeCorby and Olivia Giardetti had power-play goals for the Bold while assists were awarded to Megan Breen, Cailey Davis, Erika Crouse and Dani Fox.

The Gryphs outshot TMU 35-25 and went 1-for-8 on their power play while the Bold went 2-for-4.

The Gryphs won without forwards Hannah Tait and Chihiro Suzuki and associate coach Katie Mora. They’re at the world university games in Lake Placid with Tait and Mora with the Canadian team and Suzuki playing for Japan.

The win leaves the Gryphs at 10-3-2-4 in league play.

Next game for the Gryphs is a Hockey Day in Canada game against the Waterloo Warriors at Owen Sound Saturday. Game time at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre is 2:30 p.m.
